How to Survive the Cell Phase of Spore
Spore is out! The first step in guiding your race of alien critters through their evolution is to work them around the primordial ocean. The sea is fraught with perils and challenges to overcome.

Choose your food. You can be a carnivore, herbivore or omnivore. You can change this later on, but it is easier to make a choice and stick with it. Your choice of food determines what you eat and which colors you need to look for in the dish.

Eat everything! If you're a carnivore, eat every little scrap of meat (little red blobs) you find. If you're an herbivore, eat every scrap of greenery you see. Eating meat and plant matter gives you DNA which you can use to evolve into higher states.

Evolve as soon as you can. There's no reason to wait. Evolution offers major advantages. You become bigger and gain new body parts which can provide huge benefits for your cell's particular niche. For instance, Cillia are excellent for providing extra speed; a handy trait for carnivores that need to catch a meal. Spikes and poison sacks are excellent for defending yourself from carnivores. Don't worry about your creature retaining these items when they get to land; you can always remove them later.

Keep moving. This is very important! If you don't keep moving, you will more than likely become a meal for a predator. Even at the largest cell size, your creature is still vulnerable to larger organisms. The best defense against any creature is to swim away. This may be difficult if your attacker is faster, but it gives you a better chance.

Pick on the little guy. If you are a carnivore, other cells will be a staple food source for you. While catching the smaller cells is tougher (they tend to be faster than you) they do provide a free meal. Larger cells can also be taken on, but they tend to have defense mechanisms that can make attacking them risky business. Only attack them from the side, when you're sure you can win.
