How to Build a Log Raft
Building a raft is easy, inexpensive and fun. You just need a few logs and any material that will float–old oil drums, plastic bins or jugs and tire tubing. If it floats, you can strap it together, slap a few logs on top and make it a raft.
Things You'll Need
- Strong, buoyant wood
- 2 smaller cuts of wood
- Strong cord
- Saw or ax
- Oil drums or buoyant materials
- Drill or tool to bore holes
Instructions
-
-
1
Cut notches into the ends of four logs so that they will fit together to form a frame.
-
2
Fit logs together into notches and tie the cord over the logs in an X shape, lashing several times until they are held firmly in place.
-
-
3
Attach flat wood pieces or logs side by side across frame.
-
4
Bore holes into planks or tie cords around logs. Pull them underneath to tie around the drums or other flotation attachments to bind them together.
-
5
Tighten the cords until the logs or boards and the drums or flotation attachments are completely secured.
-
6
Use a long, sturdy pole or stick to help push your raft from the shore and navigate the water line.

Tips & Warnings
Unless you have a way to drag this heavy raft to the shoreline, you should build it where you plan to launch it.
Tie a rope to the raft to test it in the water before using it.
Always wear a life vest when rafting.
