Instructions

  1. Spray Painting

    • 1

Prepare the work area by covering the work surface with old newspapers. Work in a well-ventilated area such as garage or workshop where you can open the windows and doors to create airflow, or work outside if weather permits.

    • 2

Apply a thin coat of spray paint to the entire surface of the basket by spraying in a sweeping motion from side to side. Spray both the inside and the outside of the basket. Avoid heavy spraying, as this will cause the paint to drip and will ruin the appearance. Spray several thin coats (rather than one heavy coat) of paint to heighten color.

    • 3

Create a variegated basket by spraying two thin coats of the lightest color as a base for the basket. Apply the second color in bands around the basket to create a shaded effect. Use two or more colors that blend well together.

    • 4

Create a stained effect with spray paint by wiping the surface of the basket with a dry paper towel immediately after spraying. Allow to dry for 24 to 48 hours before creating a gift basket that contains any food products.

    Staining

    • 5

Apply acrylic wood stains by brush to bring out the natural beauty of a wooden basket. Purchase traditional wood stain for a natural look, or mix equal parts of acrylic paint in your choice of colors with a gel medium to get just the color you are looking for.

    • 6

Apply a thin layer of stain to the basket. Wipe off the excess with a dry paper towel. Darken the stain by applying additional coats, if desired. Allow to dry completely.

    • 7

Sand lightly to highlight the weave in the basket and to create a smooth finish. Apply a coat of acrylic varnish to seal in color and protect the finish. Allow to dry completely before using as a gift basket.
