Echinacea, or coneflower, has been used to improve health in many different cultures for centuries. Primarily it is used in the U.S. to strengthen the immune system. It stimulates white blood cells, which work to attack bacteria and viruses that can form infections and other ailments. Although known for its medicinal properties, it is also an attractive pink-purple flower in gardens, mostly in the Midwest.

      Rub an Echinacea cream on areas of skin that suffer from eczema or psoriasis. This supplement also works externally to fight bacteria and fungus. It soothes skin with insect bites and has an anti-inflammatory effect.

      Feel a cold or flu coming on? Echinacea has been shown to shorten the time of cold, flu and upper respiratory ailment symptoms when taken at the first signs of these common ailments.

      Studies have shown that this supplement is useful in slowing tumor growth. Current studies have had success in showing Echinacea is helpful in destroying the herpes virus.

      Gargle with a mixture of Echinacea and warm water to sooth sore throats. The anti-inflammatory effects of this supplement ease raw, inflamed throats.

      Relieve infections in kidneys, liver, sinus, bladder and other parts of the body. It is especially effective when ingested at the first sign of infection.

  • Although there has been no signs of toxicity in normal use of Echinacea, anyone allergic to daisies should not take it.
