How to Feed Toads

There are 300 species of toads.

Toads make unique pets, and they are classified as amphibians. They have bumpy skin due to warts, and they have the ability to live in drier climates. In contrast, frogs have smoother skin and usually live in or near bodies of water like ponds and marshes. Toads should have a medium-sized cage with dirt, leaves, sticks, grass and a container of water. During the cooler months, they hibernate in a burrow. During the warmer months, you can find them underneath leaves.

• Worms
• Crickets
• Flies

Instructions

1. Purchase crickets and worms from a local pet store. Or, you can find these insects in your backyard and put them in a jar. If it has rained outside, you can easily find worms on driveways or sidewalks.

2. Place a handful of crickets and worms inside the cage with the toad. The toad will eat when it's hungry, and it's best to let the toad find the insects for itself as it would normally in the wild. You probably won't see the toad eat the insects, but you can watch the amount of insects dwindle.

3. Replace a handful of insects each day or a couple times a day depending on how much the toad eats. Your toad might have a small appetite, but you have to monitor your toad to see what its eating habits are like.

4. Refill the cage with fresh water at least once a week or every couple days so that the frog stays hydrated. It's easier to house the toad in a fish tank if you have one. It needs room to hop around and catch its food.

Tips & Warnings

• Put small tree logs in the tank if you can fit them.

• If you put smaller toads or frogs into the tank/cage with your larger toad, it might eat them.
