Save Money When you Go to the Movies

If you have been to the movies in the last few years you know how expensive everything is. By the time you spend $8 to $10 at the window, go inside and get your candy, drinks, popcorn, etc your upwards to $50 in the hole or more depending on how many went with you. In this article you will learn how to beat the system a little.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cunning
  1. Step 1

So you and your friends or family has decided to go to the movies. Now let's look for ways to save money. First off go to Wal-Mart , or Blockbuster and buy movie candy. So when you are at the theater you don't spend $5 a box it will be more like $1.50 a box.

  2. Step 2

Have one of the females in the group sneak in the boxes in their purses. When the ushers come around they will be non the wiser. Scope out the theater either by phone, or past experience of you or your friends/family to see what brands of bottled drinks they serve. Also sneak these in. Now rather than $3 to $4 or more per drink you can get each at a regular store for $1 - $2 each. Add these to the hand bag.

  3. Step 3

The last thing is find out when the matinee is. If you can pull it off go during the reduced price time. Also look in your local paper for coupons, and even check out the theaters home company page. They will sometimes offer deals for frequent viewers.

  4. Step 4

As you can well imagine the theaters frown on this. However they do knowingly rip you off, and jack up the prices well over what is acceptable. That's why you have to be a little careful about what you bring in, and how you go about getting it in.

    Here is the break down on your potential savings;
    Regular Price viewing $9
    Matinee Price viewing $6
    ------------------
That is a savings of $3 approx.
Snacks bought at the theater per person $15 approx.
Snacks purchased and brought in per person $5 approx.
    -----------------------------------------------------
Per person you have the chance to save approx $10
The approx savings per person if you go during an early showing could be as much as $13 or more.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have a good sized group spread the goodies out in a few bags between guests.
  • Try to decide who gets what before you get to the showing, and mark the packages accordingly. This will cut down on the suspicions, and fumbling lessening the chance of being figured out.
  • Don't let on that there is food in the bag.
  • Don't bring in items not sold at the theater. Like a regular bag, or bar of candy, make sure you get the box that resembles the theaters stock.

on 9/27/2008 We always go during matinee times. Imagine my surprise when I went on a Tuesday night, after 6pm and the ticket was $9. Great tips on saving some money at the movies.

Drinks and snacks are sold at the movies here in the US. And they do have the right to refuse entry if you show that you have outside food, and drinks. A lot of people enjoy popcorn and a soda at the movies. But it is the other items that you can save yourself money on that really help.

on 9/25/2008 There are less orthodox ways to save money. It isn't fair to sell expensive itens as much as it isn't necessary to cover your food and drink since you have the right to buy it anywhere and eat it when you are hungry.
But I think this thing about eating at a movie very stupid because theatre isn't a restaurant and the noise and trash wont find a garbage at hand.
