Let government agencies know you are out there by signing up for pronet. PRO-NET is a free service used by government contracting officers to find companies that can fulfill their procurement needs. This can be done for free at pro-net.sba.gov.

To receive mailings when a agency is shopping around for services similar to yours send them a completed Solicitation Mailing List Application. This can usually be done through the agencies website.

Government agencies tend to favor contractors that are owned and operated by individuals that are identified as disadvantaged by the Small Business Administration.

To get your feet wet, consider starting off as a subcontractor. Many government contractors look for subcontractors to offer a wider range of services. This is a great opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the business.

on 10/19/2008 Your comment that it's not about becoming rich, but about earning a decent living as your own boss is a very good reminder. People (and I am "people", I've done it) tend to think "be your own boss" equals "rich". While it's not impossible, a better goal is to earn a livable wage ~ if you become rich, well, that's icing. The cake is earning enough to continue being your own boss!
