How to Become a Substitute Teacher in Florida

It's usually easier to become a substitute teacher than a full-time teacher.

Each school district in Florida sets its own requirements for substitute teachers. As there are more than 70 school districts, the requirements vary widely. In general, the requirements for substitute teachers are not as stringent as those for full-time teachers. For example, while you need a bachelor's degree to become a full-time teacher in Florida's public schools, you may need only a certain number of college credits, or in some cases only a high school diploma, to become a substitute teacher.

Instructions

1. Identify the school districts where you wish to work. Some districts require that you live within the district. In all cases, you should live nearby so you can accept teaching assignments on short notice.

2. Contact the school districts to get specific information on their requirements for substitute teachers and to find out if they are currently hiring.

3. Complete the required minimum education. Many districts require 60 college units, or an associate degree, but a district may require more or less education.

4. Take the state teacher certification test, if your district requires it.

5. Fill out an application form and submit it along with the required papers. Application forms and instructions should be available online and at the school district office. Depending on the district, required papers may include transcripts, references, a copy of your Social Security card and scores from the certification exam, when that is required.

6. Complete a substitute teacher training program, if required. The training programs typically take several days.
