How to Buy and Use A Canoe Seat Back

How to Buy and Use A Canoe Seat Back thumbnail
Canoe seat backs add comfort and support for your paddling experience.

Canoes generally come equipped with rather uncomfortable bar-type seats that either have a metal slat or mesh to support you while you paddle. Buying a seat back to add to the canoe can help with both comfort and support. Seat backs are made in different styles, from plastic to stadium-style strap-on attachments. Choose your style and mount a canoe seat back to paddle in comfort on your next trip out.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the spot in your canoe where you will be adding a seat back.

    • 2

Shop at a canoe store or outdoor sports dealer for canoe seat backs. They come in a variety of styles. There are plastic chair configurations with arms that look similar to the top half of a plastic lawn chair, or stadium-like seats with padded backs that strap on to the existing seat. Choose the type that best fits your needs and the size of your canoe seat.

    • 3

Attach the canoe seat back with the clips or straps that come with the package. Adjust as necessary and try the seat for fit before the canoe is launched. Make sure the fit is secure and snug and will support you.

    • 4

Fold the seat back down (if that is a feature of the type you purchased). Most fold down when not in use so they can be mounted ahead of time or left in the canoe for the entire summer season.
