Step 1
Learn the pros and cons of classic skiing.
Classic cross country skiing has existed for hundreds of years. A skier skies on long skinny skis on a fixed track made by a groomer or other skiers. Classic skiing can take a skier over varied terrain, and even through winding trails in the woods. A classic cross country skier can also ski off-trail, and make his or her own path. -
Step 2
Learn the pros and cons of skate skiing.
Skate skis are shorter and lighter than classic skis. A skate skier skies in a dynamic V-shaped motion, similar to speed skating. Skate skiing is faster than classic skiing. A skate skier has to skate on wide, perfectly groomed trails in order to travel at high speeds. Skate skis are not well-suited to back country or the classic style of skiing. -
Step 3
Determine whether there are skate ski trails in your area. Most maintained ski trails are a combination of skate and classic trails. If you live far away from wide, groomed trails, skate skiing on a regular basis may be difficult.

Step 4
Make your choice based upon your personal preference, the trails and terrain in your area, and the type of skiing performed by any friends who thoroughly enjoy skiing. If you want to ski with close friends on a regular basis, it's wise for a novice to ski with the same type of gear.
