When it comes to hurricanes, the name of the game is being prepared. There are so many things that can happen during a hurricane. It is important for every house to have a hurricane first-aid kit prepared well in advance of the any hurricane that may head your way. Follow these tips to get your hurricane first-aid kit prepared in advance of the storm, today.

  1. Step 1

    A hurricane first-aid kit needs to be much larger than your usual first-aid kit. There are many more supplies that you will have need of during a hurricane that during an everyday emergency. The first-aid kit also needs to be waterproof. The best container to use for your hurricane first-aid kit is a large plastic storage container. Preferably get a container in a bright color to help people to find it during a hurricane.

  2. Step 2

    The type of injuries that may be sustained during a hurricane are usually greater than your usual paper cut. You will need plenty of medical supplies for any type of injury that may occur during the hurricane. Place large rolls of gauze and medical tape in your hurricane first-aid kit. A pack of regular band aids need to be placed in the first-aid kit. Choose alcohol, peroxide, or betadine to place in the kit to clean out any open wounds. Some medications that you may want to put in your hurricane first-aid kit include stomach medicine and headache/ pain medicine. Antibiotic cream or sprays are great to have to put on wounds that may occur from a hurricane.

    There are other things that you will need during a hurricane. Often times, the power will go out during the storm. Inside of your hurricane first-aid kit, you need to have some candles and matches. This may seem old fashion, but you never know when they will come in handy during a hurricane. Batteries and flashlights are necessities for your kit. You should also put in a battery operated radio, so that you can keep up with the state of the storm. It is important to stay on top of what is going on with the hurricane at all times.

  4. Step 4

    The final piece to the hurricane first-aid kit is some substance for the people that will be waiting out the storm with you. Have some food and snacks that can be eaten without the use of the stove or the microwave. Peanut butter crackers are one of the great snacks that need to be included in your hurricane first-aid kit. A case of water bottles is something that needs to be put in your kit. There is always a possibility that the water at your house can become contaminated.
