The Chevy Corvette has reigned as the classic American sports car since its release in 1953. It entered its sixth generation in 2005 as a coupe or convertible. With this much power, you want to stay in control of your steering. If you find your Corvette pulling, it may be time to replace the power steering box. These steps to install a new rack and pinion system apply to all models after 2005.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Torque wrench
  • Jack and jack stands
  1. Step 1

Undo the negative battery cable and remove the brake pressure modulator valve bracket. Remove the front wheels and drain the power steering fluid.

  2. Step 2

Disconnect or remove the following components: coupling from the power steering gear, intermediate shaft shield and lower coupling, power steering inlet hose and cooler pipe. Disconnect the power steering cooler, the tie rod ends and the Magnasteer Variable Assist electrical connections.

  3. Step 3

Remove the stabilizer shaft, wire harness clips, brake pipe and mounting bolts from the crossmember. Unscrew the steering gear mounting bolts and slide it through the opening in the left wheel well.

  4. Step 4

Fasten the new assembly to the crossmember. Torque the gearbox nuts to 74 ft-lb torque and the crossmember mounting nuts to 81 foot pounds of torque. Replace the brake pipe, stabilizer shaft, variable assist electrical connector and wire harness clips.

  5. Step 5

Torque the tie rod end nuts to 15 foot pounds plus 160 degrees, the intermediate steering shaft bolt to 25 foot pounds, the cooler pipe and inlet hose fittings fitting to 20 foot pounds and the shaft shield clamp to 32 inch pounds.

  6. Step 6

Reattach the wheels and reconnect the battery cable. Refill and bleed the power steering fluid. Idle the engine to check the fluid level and look for leaks.

  7. Step 7

Align your front end. Test-drive your Chevy Corvette to make sure everything is in working order before you hit the road.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the problem really is your steering rack. Uneven tires, an unbalanced front end and even problems with the power steering control can create similar symptoms.
  • Not all Corvettes ship with the brake pressure modulator valve.
  • Cap all lines, hoses and pipes to avoid contamination.
