Replacing the coil springs in your Hyundai Sonata is easy if you're comfortable with the idea of disconnecting and reconnecting the brake assemblies and cables. By using just a ratchet set and safety stands, you can replace the coil springs from the rear suspension of your Hyundai Sonata in under 2 hours.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Support your Hyundai Sonata under the frame with safety stands, then use a jack to support the control arm and remove tension from the rear coil spring. Remove the rear wheel.

  2. Step 2

Disconnect the flange nut and brake caliper assembly, the parking brake assembly and cable, the wheel speed sensor and the rear shock absorber assembly.

  3. Step 3

Lower the jack supporting the control arm and remove the coil spring. Put a new spring in its place and raise the jack again to support the control arm, making certain that the spring is correctly seated.

  4. Step 4

Reconnect the rear shocks, the wheel speed sensor, the parking brake assembly and cable, then the brake caliper assembly and the flange nut. Finally, replace the rear wheel and lower your Sonata to the ground.

Tips & Warnings
  • Take careful note of how the coil spring is aligned and seated before you remove it; this will help you recognize whether it's properly seated when you reinstall it.
  • Always replace the coil springs on both sides at the same time.
  • Never work underneath or around a vehicle supported by only a jack; the jack may unexpectedly collapse or the vehicle may slide off of it, especially if you are applying a lot of torque to the parts.
