How to Drop the Oil Pan in a Pontiac Grand Prix
The Pontiac produced the Grand Prix from 1962 through 2008. This seventh generation vehicle has model years dating from 2004 through 2008. The manufacturer offered several engine sizes, but the 3.1L and 3.4L engines were most common. On these engine types, the oil pan may be removed for replacement of gaskets or to repair damage.

Use a jack and jack stands to raise the vehicle and support it. The manufacturer's directions for using the jack are necessary to follow.

Drain the oil from the Grand Prix by first placing an oil drip pan under the engine oil pan, located directly under the engine, between the tires. Use a wrench to remove the oil drain plug from the rear portion of the oil pan and allow the oil to drain fully before replacing the plug.

Open the hood of the vehicle and use a wrench to disconnect the negative battery cable located on the left-hand side of the front of the engine. Slide under the vehicle and locate the engine mount struts, drive belt and air conditioner compressor mounting bolts and remove each using a wrench.

Install an engine support fixture appropriate for the Grand Prix. Follow the instructions provided for installing and using the engine support fixture provided with the device.

Remove the catalytic converter, oil level sensor electrical connection running from the oil pan and the starter motor, using a wrench to unscrew each of the bolts holding them in place. Also remove the transaxle brace from where it attaches to the oil pan, and the transaxle mount and engine mount lower nuts.

Raise the engine just slightly to gain access to the oil pan. Once raised, use a wrench to remove the bolts holding the engine mount bracket from the oil pan, followed by removing the right lower ball joint and the right outer tie rod from the steering knuckle. Follow this by using a wrench to just loosen the bolts from the left side frame and the right side frame.

Use a wrench to remove the bolts in place around the outer edge of the oil pan. Once the oil pan bolts are removed, the oil pan to drop off.

To drop the oil pan, the engine of the Grand Prix must be raised, which must be done correctly and carefully to avoid injury and damage to the device.
