The Plymouth Neon is a compact vehicle that's been sold by Chrysler Corporation (followed by Daimler-Chrysler) since 1995. The vehicle stopped production in 2005. The Neon was also produced by Dodge in the United States. The vehicles were equipped with a 2.0L engine most commonly, but the 2.4L engine was a secondary option. Removing the oil pan in the Neon is necessary when there is damage to the pan.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Jack and jack stands
  • Oil drip pan
  • Wrench
  1. Step 1

Use a jack to raise the vehicle off the ground and support it using jack stands. Follow the provided directions from your manufacturer to do this properly.

  2. Step 2

Drain the oil from the Neon by going under the car and locate the oil pan which is in the center of the engine block, between the two front tires. Place an oil drip pan under the engine oil pan, use a wrench to unscrew and remove the oil pan plug at the back of the pan and allow the oil to drain fully.

  3. Step 3

Look under the hood to remove the negative battery cable, located at the very front of the engine, by the left side light. Use a wrench to disconnect the negative battery cable and set aside.

  4. Step 4

Slide under the Neon and locate the oil filter, oil filter adapter, structural collar and lateral bending brace, each located next to the oil pan and on top of it. Use a wrench to disconnect the bolts of each of these, removing each item in this order.

  5. Step 5

Locate the transaxle lower dust cover, located over the oil pan and use a wrench to disconnect each of the bolts holding it in place.

  6. Step 6

Remove each of the bolts around the outer edge of the oil pan, one by one, using a crisscross method to remove them. The oil pan will drop off once the last bolt has been removed, with the oil gasket, which should be replaced when reinstalling.

Tips & Warnings
  • In the Neon 2.4L engine, once you remove the oil filter, you will also need to use a wrench to remove the accessory drive belt splash shield, turbocharger air cooler hose and the oil cooler connector bolt. Then, remove the structural collar, and older torque strut. Don't disconnect the coolant lines that run from the oil cooler, but do move them to the side to get to the oil pan.
