How to Drop the Oil Pan in a Dodge Caravan. The Dodge Caravan is part of the Chrysler family of vehicles. This minivan has been a staple in the company's history since its introduction in 1984. The most common Dodge Caravans today are from the 4th generation, which spans from 2001 through 2007 model years. Those needing to drop the oil pan on these models will find the process straightforward. This process is for the 2.4L engine.

Allow the engine of the Caravan to run for 10 minutes, allowing it to heat up to normal temperature. Turn off the engine and place the vehicle on a sturdy, secure surface before moving on.

Jack the Dodge up using a jack and jack stands. Follow all recommended manufacturer requirements for the jack and stands to insure the vehicle is in a safe position.

Slide under the vehicle and locate the oil pan, which is directly under the engine, between the tires. It is a rectangular pan with a plug on it.

Place an oil drip pan under the oil pan and pull the plug out carefully. This will allow all of the oil in the pan to drain out. Allow to drain for 10 minutes or until the flow of oil stops.

Locate the battery of the car, located under the hood, on the far right. Use a wrench to disconnect the negative battery cable by removing the bolt that holds it in place.

Climb back under the car and remove the structural collar that is on the oil pan by using a wrench to loosen each of the bolts. Remove the air conditioning compressor bracket to the oil pan bolt next.

Brace the oil pan in place as you remove the final bolts using a wrench. These bolts are on the edges of the oil pan, holding it in place. Clean all gasket mating surfaces and the oil pan thoroughly before replacing them to keep from experiencing leaks or needing repairs.

Tips

In the 3.0L engine, you will need to remove the starter motor, front motor mount bracket, bending braces and finally the torque converter dust shield after removing the battery cable before you remove the oil pan. Each of these is located on or next to the oil pan and removed with a wrench. 3.3L and 3.8L engines will require the removal of the engine oil dipstick (located under the hood next to the oil cap,) the drive belt splash shield, the strut to transaxle attaching bolt, and the transaxle case cover (all located under the vehicle, near or on the oil pan).
