There are 2 ways to make a webpage. One way is to make the page(s) offline, and then upload them to your (ISP) internet service provider. The other is to make your webpage online using a Telnet program, by accessing your UNIX account if you've got one.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • ISP
  • Internet Service Provider, is a company that for a monthly fee hooks you up to the internet, for example, Verizon, Earthlink, AOL, or Cox Communications.
  1. Step 1

If you are making your webpage(s) offline, do so in a text editing or word processing document. Be sure that when you save your document you save it as a text", "plain text" or "text only" document. Or it will not be read properly by a web browser. After you have made your pages, you will need to contact your ISP to get directions for uploading them to your server.

  2. Step 2

If you have a UNIX account you can make your webpage(s) online. You will have to get a program that will access your UNIX account. They are Telnet for Mac or EWAN for Windows 95/98. Now once you are able to access your account then you can make a new directory called "public_html". You will do this by typing the command: mkdir public_html. After this step then go back and change your directory to public_html.

  3. Step 3

If you wish to, you can make other directories one for each of the webpages that you've made, and also one for all of the graphics that you've got. Just repeat the same steps as above to do this.

  4. Step 4

Next, you will need a filename for your page (this isn't a title, but rather what will be in the URL). A popular filename for a main webpage is "index". When you have decided upon this, add ".html" to the end of it and then type: pico index.html.

  5. Step 5

But, use your page's filename, instead of this one. Follow the index to decide what to put on your page, and how to do it. Once you have started this, exit your page. Do this by pressing control-x, and then type chmod 744 index.html.

  6. Step 6

However, only do this with the filename of your page. You only have to do this the very first time that you leave your webpage. This command will prevent someone else from deleting your page. And also keep in mind that you will have to do this again in the future to any othr page(s) that you make. Then look up your page on the WWW. Let's assume that your server is "www.domain.com", and that your username is "username", and that the name of your page is "index.html". Then your URL would normally then be: http://www.domain.com/~username/index.html. But, remember, that you will still have to contact your ISP for your URL.

  7. Step 7

Once you have made separate directories for pages and graphics, then you will have to include that in the URL as well. Suppose that you make a directory for all of your webpages, and call it "Pages". Your new URL will then be: http://www.domain.com/~username/Pages/index.html.
