Remove Odors from your Refrigerator
Remove Odors from your Refrigerator

If you've tried everything, from hours of cleaning to bowls filled with baking soda, than you understand how frustrating it can be to try to remove old odors from a refrigerator. This recipe is a great way to absorb those nasty smells and leave your fridge smelling lovely!

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/2 cup crushed charcoal
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 2 tbsp orange or lemon peel
  • 1 tbsp ground cloves or cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp vanilla extract
  • Old, clean nylon stockings, cut into 2-inch squares
  • 1/2 yard porous fabric (terry cloth, loose-weave cotton, old towels or washclothes) cut into 2-inch squares
  • String or ribbon, cut into 8-inch lengths for tying and hanging
  1. Step 1

For the charcoal you can buy regular charcoal briquettes and use a hammer to crush them into small chunks.

  2. Step 2

Combine the charcoal, baking soda, citrus peel, cloves, and vanilla extract in a medium-size glass or enamel bowl. Stir mixture and let it sit for at least 1 hour.

  3. Step 3

Create a sache with the mixture by putting 2 tbsp of the mixture in the center of a nylon stocking square and then placing this packet in the center of a square of the porous fabric. Tie the corners together with the string or ribbon.

  4. Step 4

To use, tie a packet in an inconspicuous spot in the refrigerator or freezer. Or tie onto a shelf inside the door.

Tips & Warnings
  • This recipe yields 5 - 7 packets.
  • For longer life, sprinkle with a few drops of vanilla and add 1 tsp of baking soda after 10 - 12 weeks.
