How to Adjust Brake Pedal Height in a VW Jetta

The VW Jetta is a great four-door car for college students or people looking to buy their first new car. Many people like to adjust the amount of brake give (the amount of space the brakes have between when drivers press on them and when the brakes engage) for comfort reasons.

Instructions

    • 1

Push your seat completely back; you're going to need to get into the brake pedal.

    • 2

Follow the brake pedal up to where it attaches to a rod called the push rod. Locate the bolt (called lock bolts) on the push rod.

    • 3

Loosen the bolt using your line wrench.

    • 4

Use your pliers to loosen the push rod. To get it tighter, turn it to the left. If you need it looser, turn it to the right.

    • 5

Tighten the lock bolts using your line wrench once you think you've loosened or tightened your push rod enough. Consider testing the give on your brakes before tightening the lock bolts to save yourself time.

    • 6

Check your brakes to make sure you didn't loosen or tighten your push rod too much.

    • 7

Grab a ruler and measure the amount of give you've given yourself. Put the ruler against the brake and lift it as high as you can, using your fingers. Then press against the brake until it makes contact with the other side. After adjusting, if this amount is less than 0.5 mm, you'll have to adjust your push rod again or your brakes will drag. In general, you shouldn't adjust your brakes so the amount is greater than 2 mm.

Tips & Warnings

  • The Volkswagen company recommends not adjusting the push rod height yourself since it's a very specific measurement. If you want to know the exact measurement of the length of the push rod, it is precisely 5.433 inches long, plus or minus 0.019 inches.
