The Bonneville has been a fixture on Pontiac dealership lots for 47 years. This particular Pontiac got its name from Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. In 1957, the Bonneville was a high performance, convertible car with tail fins. The reputation of the Bonneville from the beginning has been luxurious with tons of power from its V8 engine. The Bonneville has become a collector's item for many roadsters.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Inspect the Bonneville exhaust system on a regular basis. This specific Pontiac is a high performer; you don't want to change that.

  2. Step 2

Determine what parts of the exhaust system needs repair with an under-the-car inspection. A lift makes this process quick and easy.

  3. Step 3

Start the inspection at the rear; it is easier to make a list of what you need for repairs. The tailpipe should be free of holes, rust, corrosion and have clear air expelled.

  4. Step 4

Check the catalytic converter at a dealership with an electronic emissions test. Your emissions rating must be correct or you can't pass an inspection.

  5. Step 5

Investigate the condition of all the gaskets in the system. You need to disassemble the exhaust system to inspect the gaskets. If the system is apart anyway, you might as well replace the gaskets.

  6. Step 6

Spray WD-40 on all bolts, nuts and clamps to determine just how much corrosion and rust has developed.

  7. Step 7

Throw out any rusted or broken nuts, bolts and clamps. Make sure the exhaust system can vibrate. You don't want to hear a rattle, just a soft vibration.

Tips & Warnings
  • A rattling noise from the undercarriage means that your exhaust system needs some major repairs.
