Open G is one of the most famous alternate tunings in guitar history. It's been used by blues greats and rock legends alike for slide playing. Here's how to tune your guitar to Open G.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Electronic tuner (or)
  • Piano or keyboard and the ability to tune by ear
  • Guitar slide
  1. Step 1

    Tune your first string (the thickest string) down one whole step to D.

  2. Step 2

    Tune your second string down one whole step to G.

  3. Step 3

    Tune your third string to D. (Keep it at D if you started in standard tuning).

  4. Step 4

    Tune your fourth string to G. (Keep it at G if you started in standard tuning).

  5. Step 5

    Tune your fifth string to B. (Keep it at B if you started in standard tuning).

  6. Step 6

    Tune your sixth string down one whole step to D.

  7. Step 7

    The order of the strings is D G D G B D. Your guitar is now tuned to an open G major chord.

    Rock and blues guitarists love this tuning because they can quickly drop three strings (1st, 2nd, 6th) down one whole step each to get to the open G tuning perfect for slide guitar.
