How to Vacuum A Thick Carpet

Here's how to vacuum a thick carpet or pile rug.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Set the vacuum height to the highest setting.

Most vacuums have a knob or step lever near the roller head that adjusts the height of the vacuum. Set this knob or click the lever to the highest setting before vacuuming a thick pile rug.

  2. Step 2

Use the widest suction attachment possible.

If you think the roller head will damage the rug, even at the tallest height setting, take off the vacuum hose and use the widest suction attachment that comes with your vacuum to carefully vacuum the rug.

  3. Step 3

    Spot clean to minimize vacuuming.

Use Oxi-Clean or a similar carpet safe spot cleaner to clean up dirt and grime. Spot cleaning saves wear on the entire surface of your carpet.

  4. Step 4

Use a home steamer as well as a vacuum.

Use a home steamer on your rug occasionally to maximize the "clean" appearance without excessive and damaging vacuuming.
