My Father, Felton, M. expired on September 12, 2008. He was 87; almost 88. For me, as well as for many of you, preparing and writing a Eulogy (aka speech) will be a very stressful exercise. Saying nothing of the actual "Eulogy Performance."

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Get in touch with your own thoughts and feelings.
  • Make necessary arrangements via online internet (i.e. hotel, car rental, flight, etc.
  • Decide if You are the best Woman/Man for the Job. If not, delegate with supervision.
  • Accentuate the positive; be nice. Touch on the negatives; but go easy.
  • Respect Dad's religious preferences while staying comfortable with that of your own.

Really get in touch with your own emotions ... first!

  2. Step 2

Decide how you can honor your Father; deal with the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

  3. Step 3

Don't Think; just write or type. Let your thoughts flow. Pour yourself out unto the page.

  4. Step 4

Edit, cut, read. Edit, cut, read. Repeat the previous step and let your dad eulogy sit and cool for a bit.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be Real; be honest.
  • Find a way to speak highly.
  • Its OK to sprinkle in some "real truth."
  • Find one or two things about Dad for which you are grateful to the Universe.
  • Locate the song or video, "The Living Years" as recorded by Mike and the Mechanics (1999)
  • Eulogy-Writing is a very Powerful exercise.
  • Possibly, the emotions may trigger a real medical trauma
  • Remember the words of Rev Jesse Jackson, "We tend to Bury the Living and Raise the Dead
  • Recall the 3B-s: Be Short, Be Quick, Be Gone!
