Raise Seahorses
Raise Seahorses

If you ever raised seahorses you know how difficult it is to keep them alive. These salt water creatures are particular and sensitive about the amount of salt in the water and its temperature.
If you decide to raise seahorses you should raise them by themselves. Seahorses are passive and feel threaten by other fish. The fish tank should be set up and running for at least four to six months before introducing the seahorses.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Seahorses need to live in a clean and quiet environment. The chemical levels should be checked daily to prevent the seahorse from going into distress and changing colors.

  2. Step 2

The filtration system should be strong for cleaning purposes but not to strong because the seahorse is light and can easily get caught in the filter. Find a filtration system that is quiet and causes the least amount of movement in the tank.

  3. Step 3

The fish tank should have plenty of places for the seahorse to hide. Place stone and grass in the tank so they can disappear easily. Always buy seahorses in pairs and make sure they are of the same breed. Seahorses usually pick their mates for life. The male seahorse carries the babies before their born. Seahorses have been known to die soon after their mate dies.

  4. Step 4

If you choose a large tank for your seahorses you should make a feeder for them. A feeder can be made from plastic tubing used for hamsters to run through. Twist tubing together setting the top piece of tubing just above the water, making the bottom piece with a curve. Put two or three small suction cups on the feeder by putting small holes in the plastic without breaking the tube. When you’re finished the feeder should look like a cane. Push suction cups against glass of tank and they will stick to the tank. The pieces of tubing should snap together without glue or chemicals.

  5. Step 5

Seahorses like live brine shrimp and the brine shrimp are so small they can get lost in the filtration system before the seahorses can get to them, causing the seahorses to starve. Place the shrimp at the top of the feeder and give it time to melt if frozen. The shrimp will fall and find their way to the bottom of the feeder where the seahorses can reach the food with ease. This is how to raise seahorses.

on 11/22/2008 We can't have a dog or cat because of allergies--I think they would make such an interesting pet--something different.
