Get Work As a Freelance Grant Writer

Grant Writing can be a great way for freelance writers of various skills to earn a living. A freelance grant writer can find work with just a little volunteer experience and a great writing ability. Learn the different ways to find grant freelance projects.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Some experience working with grants.
  • Computer with internet connection.
  • Writing ability.
  1. Step 1

Most freelance writing sites have separate sections for clients to post jobs for grant proposal writing. These jobs are usually easy and to the point, the information needed is already gathered for the writer to put together. To get started I recommend trying Elance.com, Getafreelancer.com, Rentacoder.com and Freelancewriting.com/

  2. Step 2

Send your resume and rates to nonproffits in your area. Grant writers with reasonable rates are always in need. Many business' want to hire Certified Grant Writers for the large projects but will try out new faces for smaller jobs. Call around to local Professional grant writers to see what their rates are and drop your rates to half. Most Professionals will not mind because you can help companies that can not afford them.

  3. Step 3

As in step two, contact local Professional Grant writers and give them your card. Many Experienced Writers use beginners to save time when working with mundane tasks in a grant project. Such projects include working with surveys and focus groups for grant research. As they get to know you they may even, hand off small jobs they do not have time for or jobs that can not afford them.

Tips & Warnings
  • Writing portfolios are not appropriate to show potential clients, due to privacy issues with grant writing. If a client would like to see a portfolio, a couple article you have written about various grant research and programs may be more appropriate to show.
  • When working with other grant writers, make sure never to take over another writer's client. This can form a bad relationship with you and the writer and is not worth one client.
