I remember seeing one of these in the woods when I was a kid. My mother especially took me over there to see it since she had found it. It was a gold color. We were in Connecticut in Litchfield County. It is a protected species and can't be picked or dug up.

Things You'll Need:

  • Patience
  1. Step 1

Find out where you might be able to see them. They are very difficult to find and are becoming extinct. You would have to look in the woods in different places where they grow. I know we were in Connecticut and the picture is from North Carolina. They had them in Kentucky. They are just becoming extinct now.

  2. Step 2

You can't pick them. We can just see them out in the woods it is enough. It would not do any good since they are very delicate and would not last as they are wild and delicate. So just look at it if you see it and enjoy it while you are there. It takes years to grow.

  3. Step 3

You may be able to buy one on the Internet. There are places on the Internet that are selling them. There is one that is called Vermont Ladyslippers. It was featured on Martha Stewart and is legal. They may have them from Europe. I have a link here. They may have them in other specialty garden centers. Make sure it is legal. You probably can't get it in a regular garden center. They are calling them orchids.

Tips & Warnings
  • It is a great way to teach kids about the beauty of nature. Just that it is there shows something.
  • There really are penalties for taking them
