Things You'll Need:
- Pot of boiling water
- Glass baking dish
- Macaroni (different shapes are fun to eat)
- Butter
- Milk
- Salt and Pepper
- Lots of Cheese
-
Step 1
Bring water to a full boil in a medium pot. Add macaroni (put enough dry uncooked macaroni in the glass baking dish till half full...this is how I measure how much to cook) along with a little salt (to your liking) and boil until semi-soft.
-
Step 2
While the macaroni is boiling, cut cheese (use sharp or colby or whatever is your favorite) into half inch chunks. Also slice enough cheese to lay on top of macaroni when the time comes. Spread shredded mozzarella cheese to cover the bottom of a glass baking dish.
-
Step 3
Drain the macaroni and stir in milk and a tablespoon of butter. Make sure that the milk is half way as deep as your macaroni. Salt and pepper to taset.
Pre-heat your oven to 325 degree. -
Step 4
Put lots of chunks of cheese in macaroni and stir. Pour over the shredded mozzarella. Top with a semi-thick layer of sliced sharp cheddar cheese.
-
Step 5
Bake slow at 325 degrees for about 45 minutes...keep checking to make sure the top layer of cheese does not become too brown. If needed, lay a sheet of foil over the top, gently, to prevent further browning as it continues to bake.
-
Step 6
After the baked macaroni comes out of the oven, let it sit for a little while to ensure that the milk is absorbed by the macaroni. Serve and enjoy the great comments everyone will make about your great baked macaroni dish!

on 10/25/2008 I had to leave another comment on this. FINALLY I was able to make real baked mac and cheese by following your exact recipe. You added in so many details the darn cookbooks just don't share with you and I kept messing up. I'm really not a good cook and get discouraged easily. But thank you so much for being the person to finally teach me to make this dish. My family loves it and now I can give it to them. 5 *****
