This makes a great meal, kids love this sandwich, serve with fries or chips, potato salad, what a great meal. Sloppy Joes is a new descriptive word to my cooking skills. I was raised in Iowa and we called them Taverns...enjoy and let me know if you just love 'em.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • ground beef
  • ketchup
  • dry mustard
  • onion
  • chili powder
  1. Step 1

Brown 1 1/2 pounds of ground beef, season with salt and pepper and add 1 1/2 teaspoons dry mustard. Be sure and break up ground beef after you have it browned so that it is no longer in chunks but fine pieces.

  2. Step 2

In saucepan combine 1 cup ketchup, 1 cup water, 1/2 onion chopped, 1 teaspoon chili powder. Simmer until onions are softened.

  3. Step 3

Add the browned and seasoned ground beef to the above mixture.

  4. Step 4
    Pickles

Simmer on low heat for 30 minutes.
Serve warm on hamburger buns with dill pickle slices and a slice of your favorite cheese.

Tips & Warnings
  • Enjoy your sloppy joes. This mixture also freezes well for a quick meal. Remember to choose a good bakery hamburger bun and just as good dill pickle. We like a nice slice of cheddar or colby cheese to top our "taverns".
