Step 1
Log into your router via web browser (usually routers IP is 192.168.1.1). The default password is usually "admin" and leave the username blank. Another way to figure out what IP address is assigned to your Linksys or any other router is to click START > RUN > Type CMD and hit enter. At command prompt type IPCONFIG. The DEFAULT GATEWAY is the IP address that is assigned to your router.
-
Step 2
From main configuration page, click WIRELESS
-
Step 3
Then click WIRELESS SECURITY
-
Step 4
For security mode, choose WEP
-
Step 5
Keep your default Transmit Key to (1) and set your encryption level to either 64 bits or 128 bits. (128 bits is more secure then 64 bit and much harder to crack.
-
Step 6
Now you can either create a passphrase which will automatically generate key values or you can set your own key values. (You only have to set KEY 1)
-
Step 7
Click SAVE SETTINGS

on 10/3/2008 The WRT54G series of routers generally support WPA, which is better than WEP which is generally considered obsolete and vulnerable to being cracked. Wikipedia explains it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wired_Equivalent_Privacy
If you use WEP, in my opinion, you are just latching the screen door.
