Open book tests

When many people hear that they have an open book test they assume that they don't really have to study. This is certainly very far from the truth. Open book tests require studying of a different nature. Here are some ways to study for your next open book test.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Time for preparation
  • Relaxing environment
  1. Step 1

Read over the chapters that will be covered on the open book test, taking notes and highlighting the most important information as you go. Take breaks in between reading the chapters so that your mind will stay fresh.

  2. Step 2
    Check out that highlighted information

After you have read through the chapters, go back and look at everything you have highlighted again. There must be a reason you have highlighted these things, so go back and see exactly what it is all about.

  3. Step 3
You won't have time to look up every question

You won't have time to look up every question

Understand that open book tests are generally far different than closed book tests. You will often have much less time to take the test, so you simply won't have time to find every answer. Your goal needs to be to get yourself prepared enough so that you only need to look up some of the questions on the test.

  4. Step 4

Take the time to state things from the book in your own opinion when you take the test. Most teachers don't simply want a copied down word for word answer from the text. You need to be able to show that you know how to apply it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you are in a relaxing environment when studying.
  • Don't wait until the last night and cram all of your studying into an all nighter.

on 9/22/2008 Open book tests were my favorite. I think it is a good way to teach people how to apply what they learn or read without plagarizing. Good study techniques are important to reduce time searching for answers. A very good article. ^5.
