This is part 4 of my 4 part guide on solving the Rubik's Cube. The focus of this part is to complete the 3rd layer and finish the cube. We will continue from where we left off in part 3 with the upper layer cross already completed and all the side pieces in place. After reading this guide, I hope everyone will have learned how to solve a Rubik's Cube and might try to improve your speed next. Anyways, thanks for reading my guide, good luck, and HAPPY CUBING! ^^

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You'll Need:

  • Important symbols to know:
  • F(Front face)
  • L(Left)
  • R(Right)
  • U(Upper)
  • D(Down)
  • B(Back)
  • R(no ')= rotate side one quarter turn (90°) CLOCKWISE-in this case, rotate right side
  • U'= rotate side one quarter turn (90°) COUNTERCLOCKWISE-in this case, rotate upper side
  • D"= rotate side one half turn (180°)-in this case, rotate down side
  • IMPORTANT NOTICE: rotating clockwise and counterclockwise is with respect to that specific side (pretend looking at the side as if it were a clock and rotate accordingly
  1. Step 1

Now, we must put the corner pieces in their correct places. We're not trying to completely solve the Cube yet, we just want to put the corner pieces in place, regardless of orientation. For example, if you see a green/red/yellow corner piece, you would want to put it in the corner that has the green/red/yellow centers. It doesn't have to be oriented correctly, it just has to be in the correct place for now. There are 4 possible scenarios so again, follow the algorithms. Here's scenario 1

  2. Step 2

    Here's scenario 2

  3. Step 3

    Here's scenario 3

  4. Step 4

    Here's scenario 4

  5. Step 5

Here's an example of what the cube should look like now

Notice how the blue/green/red corner is in the right place even though its not oriented correctly yet

  6. Step 6

The last step is to correctly orient the corner pieces and solve the cube. There are 2 algorithms for this and you have to do them in pairs. Perform one after the other. It may look like you're screwing up the cube but you'll have to trust the algorithms.

  7. Step 7

    Here's the 2nd algorithm/scenario

  8. Step 8

Here's an example of how you would combine the 2 algorithms to solve the cube. This is just one specific example scenario that only works in this case.

  9. Step 9

And there! You should have the whole cube solved now!

Hope you all had fun!! ^^
