Step 1
Create a floor plan that you can rearrange.
You do not have to make a floor plan on paper. There is a nifty program called SeeMyDesign. It's free and you can get it at seemydesign.com
You can create sample floor plans to figure out how you could be making better use of your space. -
Step 2
Get organized.
It's time to get rid of the stacks of books and papers. Buy yourself some plastic storage totes in assorted sizes to organize odds and ends. Get a file cabinet if you need one. Put all of your rubber bands, paper clips and pens in a drawer organizer. Neatly wrap all of your power cords and put them in a cord keeper. -
Step 3
Get rid of stuff you do not need.
Donate or sell old software and PC games. The same goes for CDs and books. You can take these items to a used bookstore or sell on eBay. -
Step 4
Downsize your office furniture if you need to.
Do you really need a huge desk for just a laptop? Or, is your desk functioning as a clutter trap? In order to maximize home office space, you may need to acquire smaller office furniture. -
Step 5
Keep it clean.
Don't let your trash can overflow. Dust everything once in awhile. Bring in a couple houseplants to help purify the air and look nice. -
Step 6
Here is a final trick:
Mirrors can make rooms look bigger. Hang up a mirror or two to give the appearance that your office space is larger.
