How to Groom a Schnauzer

The schnauzer is a beloved pet in many households. The distinct look of the schnauzer--lean with a short body and long hair around the face--is part of what makes these creatures so popular. However, this distinct look is a lot of responsibility for the owner. In order to prevent mats and infection, you must know how to properly groom your dog.

Instructions

    • 1

Maintain your schnauzer’s healthy coat by keeping it free of mats. By brushing your pet’s fur at least twice a week, you can help to prevent this fine, long hair from becoming tangled and knotted and eventually needing to be cut out. Simply use a pet grooming brush and lightly run it completely through the coat.

    • 2

Trim the schnauzer facial area very carefully. Experts recommend that you use a pair of grooming clippers and run with the grain of the hair to avoid infections. Using a longer guard, such as a number 10 or 15, will maintain the traditional schnauzer look while keeping the hair neat.

    • 3

Cut the rest of the body’s hair by using a number 10 guard. Start at the base of the schnauzer's neck and follow the spine to the base of the tail. From the spine, trim downward on the sides in neat rows. Trim the chest area as well. Keep the hair on the belly longer and snip an inch or so off with a pair of scissors.

    • 4

Use a much shorter guard to trim the tail. Again, move with the grain to avoid painful snags. The tail should be free of curly hair when you are finished.

    • 5

Purchase a pair of strong dog nail clippers to handle their paws. Hold one paw in your hand while the dog lays down. Snip the nail back, but do not exceed the quick—the white internal cavity in the nail.
