When it comes to protecting your home and your family from a fire, prevention is still your number one defense. Read on for tips to keep in mind that will help keep you safe from fires throughout the holiday season.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Do not overload electrical outlets with decorative lights. Use an extension cord and be sure that the wires are not overheating. Also, do not leave these lights unattended.

  2. Step 2

Use nonflammable or flame-retardant holiday decorations. If you use an artificial holiday tree, make sure it is flame-retardant as well.

  3. Step 3

Monitor all candles and extinguish before leaving the room, even if for a few moments.

  4. Step 4

Do not run space heaters unattended. Place these space heaters at least 3 feet away from bedding, furniture, towels and drapes.

  5. Step 5

Do not leave food cooking unattended.

  6. Step 6

Try to not wear loose clothing with dangling sleeves when cooking holiday meals.

  7. Step 7

Check your smoke alarm once a month by pressing the test button. Replace all of your batteries at least once a year.
