Use this tutorial to install the missing American English spell check file into Open Office 3 Beta for Windows. The user must have administrator privileges to use this fix.

Instructions

    • 1

Make certain that all instances of Open Office are closed, including the Quickstarter in the system tray.

    • 2

Visit the OpenOffice.org Wiki "Dictionaries" article linked below. From the page's index list, select "English (AU,CA,GB,NZ,US,ZA)". There will be a list of different dictionary file options. Click on "English - United States" to obtain the "en_US.zip" file. The download window will open; save and unzip it to the desktop.

    • 3

Double click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop. Then, select the hard drive with the program files. For most users, it'll be hard drive C.

    • 4

Select the folder named "Program Data." Inside of this folder are other folders containing program information. Select the one that says "OpenOffice.org 3."

    • 5

The OpenOffice.org 3 folder contains several HTML and text documents, along with four folders. Double-click the one named "Share."

    • 6

Inside of the "Share" folder are five more folders. Open the folder named "Uno_packages." Next, open the "Cache" folder that's inside. Select the "Uno_packages" folder once more.

    • 7

There will be three folders inside of this "uno_packages." The first, 7EB.tmp_, is the one missing the files. Open this folder. There will be a single folder called "dict-en.oxt." Select and open this location.

    • 8

Open the "en.US" folder on the desktop, and select "en_US.dic" and "en_US.aff." Copy these files.

    • 9

Click back to the open "dict-en.oxt" folder and paste the new files from the clipboard. Close all windows.

    • 10

Start up Open Office 3 Beta again and open a text document to verify the changes.

Tips & Warnings

  • Save a complete program file for the previous version of Open Office, even if the Beta version is working well. Beta software is notoriously unstable, and preserving the old files makes reinstall easy in case of trouble.
