How to Grow Grass Using Hay

Water frequently to hydrate soil

When it comes to growing grass, you can never be sure about the weather, but a layer of loose hay hay can prevent your grass seeds from blowing away or being swept away by the rain. So if you have any bald spots in your yard or if you have to reseed a portion of your lawn, hay can protect those newly planted seeds. After you plant the seeds and put down hay, your patience and responsible watering can help you see grass in no time.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Rake the area you wish to reseed so that the soil gets mixed up. When the soil is tilled, it helps the grass seeds attach to the soil and provide a foundation for them to grow.

    • 2

Heavily and evenly sprinkle the grass seeds where you have tilled the soil. Sometimes it's easier to grab the seeds with your hands and sprinkle them onto the soil. If you keep the seeds in the bag, be careful that you don't dump it onto the ground all at once.

    • 3

Grab handfuls of hay and place them on top of the grass seeds. The hay will keep the grass put during windy and rainy days.

    • 4

Use a hose with a sprinkler attachment to hydrate the newly planted grass seeds. The sun can quickly dehydrate the soil, so you should water your grass at least twice a day--once in the morning and once in the evening, when its cool.

Tips & Warnings

  • If grass is dead, rip it out and grow new grass.

  • Flooding, high winds and drought can prevent grass from growing.
