1. Graduate from high school or get a general education diploma (GED). To become a substitute teacher in Alabama you don’t have to have a college degree, but you do need to have a high school diploma or a GED to be eligible for the position.

2. Fill out an application to become a substitute teacher. You can obtain an application from the board of education in any Alabama city.

3. Pass a criminal background check. To become a substitute teacher in Alabama, you’ll be required to pass a criminal background check from the Alabama Bureau of Investigation (ABI), as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The fees to obtain the background checks are your responsibility.

4. Obtain a tuberculosis (TB) test with a negative result. You can have a TB test done at most outpatient clinics for a nominal fee.

5. Attend a training seminar. Once you have met all of the requirements, you will be called to attend a training class to prepare you for substitute teaching.
