Instructions

    • 1

Find the property lines. Measure 8 inches in from the property line and mark the measurements with ground paint. If your neighbor has no problems with a fence and gives his permission, you can put the fence right on the property line.

    • 2

Measure and mark off the postholes. The average fence panel is 8 feet wide, so the postholes need to be about 7 feet 10 inches apart. This allows 2 inches on each end to overlap the 4-inch fence posts.

    • 3

Dig out the corner holes to about 2 feet deep. Sink a post into the hole. Make sure the posts stick out of the ground the same height. Add large rocks or broken cement blocks to help steady the posts. Fill the holes with concrete.

    • 4

Tack a string to the top of one post and run it to the next post. This will be used to be sure the rest of the posts are the same height. Dig the rest of the postholes and add large rocks or broken cement to help steady the posts.

    • 5

Let the cement cure for at least 48 hours. Once it is cured, you can attach the fence panels. Nail or screw the fence panels to the posts. The smooth side of the fence panels should face your neighbors.

    • 6

Stain or paint both sides of the fence if you desire. The wooden fence panels are made to withstand weather, but will last longer if you protect them with stain or paint.
