How to Tie Dye Paper Towels

Finding the perfect paper towels or napkins for a 1960s themed party is almost impossibile. Creating your own tie dyed paper towels is simple and easy and can be a project the whole family can enjoy doing together. Even young children can try their hand at making fun patterns with psychedelic color.

  • Food coloring
  • Eye or medicine droppers (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Separate the paper towels on the roll. Lay them in stacks of three or four towels each.

    • 2

Pull up sections of the stack, bunch together, twist and secure with rubber bands or strings. Try to do four or five secured bunches for each stack.

    • 3

Drop several drops of food coloring onto different places to cover an entire secure bunch. Make sure to saturate the entire bunched area with color. Use a different color of food coloring for each bunch.

    • 4

Allow the paper towels to dry. Carefully cut away the rubber bands or strings from the towels.

    • 5

Lay the towels out flat to further dry out the paper. Fold into whatever shape you desire for the party.

Tips & Warnings

  • Purchase the best quality paper towels you can find for this project. Cheap paper towels will rip or shred too easily when securing the bunched up areas.

  • Using food coloring instead of dyes makes the tie dyed paper towels safe for food use.

  • If a number of people are participating in the creation of the tie dye process, put the food coloring into small cups or custard dishes and use several eye or medicine droppers for each color.
