Wrap Christmas Presents Without Paper

Every year, Christmas wrapping paper contributes greatly to the waste that goes into landfills. It's unnecessary to create extra garbage simply because it's the holiday season. There are several ways to wrap presents without damaging the environment. One of the best ways is use a traditional Japanese wrapping cloth called a furoshiki. Presents wrapped in a furoshiki look every bit as attractive under the tree as ones wrapped in paper. These decorative wrapping cloths also make very good conversation pieces at Christmas gatherings and can be reused again for future holidays.

From Quick Guide: Gift Wrapping for Beginners
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the basic wrapping method for some of your square or rectangular Christmas gifts. Lay a square piece of furoshiki cloth on your workspace diagonally with the decorative side facing down. As you face the cloth, it should look like a diamond. Fold the bottom corner up over the gift box. Lift the top corner downward and lay it over the gift, as well. Raise the two side corners upward and tie them in a simple double knot at the center.

  2. Step 2

Use the four tie wrapping method as an alternative to vary the appearance of your packages. Set the cloth down as in Step 1. Lift the two side corners and tie them together around the gift. Then, tie the top and bottom corners on top, creating the appearance of a bow.

  3. Step 3

Wrap round Christmas gifts such as basketballs and soccer balls by first tying the very end of two corners on one side. Then tie the other two corners in the same manner. Push one tie through the loop of the other, and pull the cloth upward to close the package.

  4. Step 4

Use a rolling method for long, round and slender Christmas gifts, such as bottles of wine and posters. Place the gift on the very edge of the bottom corner of the furoshiki cloth. Begin to roll the present in the cloth. Pull down the two corners that appear at the top and bottom of the item. Tie them at the center of the gift.

  5. Step 5

Set the cloth down diagonally to wrap long packages such as ties and slender jewelry boxes. Place the present on the furoshiki cloth and tie the two corners on the upper right side. Push the bottom right corner through the loop created by the first tie. Pull the corner through all the way and tie it so that both knots match.

Tips & Warnings
  • Purchase several furoshiki cloths well in advance of the holiday season to ensure that you have enough wrapping material.
  • You can also make your own furoshiki cloths, or reuse old cloth napkins, scarves or bandanas for wrapping Christmas presents.
  • Give your furoshiki cloth away to the recipient and ask that they reuse it again next year.
  • Always make sure the cloth is large enough to accommodate the present prior to purchasing it.
  • Pad breakable items before wrapping them in the furoshiki cloth.
