How to Do a Burnout Start in "Mario Kart Wii"

In Nintendo's popular racing game, "Mario Kart Wii," racers are constantly spun out by items and other obstacles on the track. Getting back to top speed takes valuable time, especially for vehicles with bad acceleration. A burnout start is a trick that uses the game's power-sliding mechanic to charge up a burst of speed while stationary, allowing the racer to reach top speed faster.

Instructions

    • 1

Slow down to a stop. With all the items and hazards flying around, this will happen often.

    • 2

Hold down the power-slide button. Although players racing with the automatic steering setting do not normally use the power slide button, the burnout start can still work on automatic.

    • 3

Hold down the acceleration button. As you are holding the two buttons, your vehicle's wheels will begin to spin, but you won't be moving anywhere. During this time, you can turn on a dime while staying in place, so rotate yourself to face the optimal direction. Eventually, a blue flame will appear behind your vehicle, as it would if you were charging up a normal power slide while driving.

    • 4

Release the power slide button. You will experience a sudden boost in speed, taking you from a standstill to top speed in an instant.

Tips & Warnings

  • The burnout start is most useful for vehicles with bad acceleration. Vehicles with good acceleration will go faster by accelerating as normal.

  • Attempting a burnout start means your vehicle will be stationary for a few seconds as the power slide charges up. This will make you an easy target for racers coming up from behind you to hit you with items.
