Mac OS X Leopard introduced Stacks, dock items that give you fast access to folders and files. Mac OS X 10.5 comes with Stacks for Applications, Documents and more. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to create an entirely new Stack in your Dock that lists everything from Recent Applications and Documents to Recent Servers.

      Mac OS X Terminal Application

      Click on “Applications” and find your “Utilities” folder. Open your “Utilities” folder and find “Terminal.” Double-click "Terminal" to open the application.

      The Stack Command in Terminal

      In your terminal, type the following command and hit enter/return:defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-others -array-add '{ "tile-data" = { "list-type" = 1; }; "tile-type" = "recents-tile"; }'

      Type in the following command and hit your enter/return key in the Terminal application to restart your Dock:killall Dock

      The Stack View Options

      View the Stack. Once the Dock has restarted, you will have a new Stack that will list a number of options. Cntl-click on the application for the available options. The options include Recent Applications, Documents and Servers, and Favorite Items and Volumes.

      Launching Firefox From the Stack

      Use the Stack. To use the Stack, simply click on the Stack in your dock and a pop-up menu will appear. Click on the item you wish to launch.
