How to Choose a Barn Dance Party Theme

Traditionally, a barn dance is any kind of dance held in a barn, usually involving folk music. But barn dances have evolved into family-style or community-oriented events involving dancing of some sort, and are often country-western themed. Colleges and universities have also begun to throw barn dances, in and out of barns, as “kegger” parties. Lastly, a barn dance can involve Irish or Scottish dancing, square dancing, Contra dancing, English country dancing, or country and western dancing. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Investigate the styles of dance that are popular in your area. Search your local paper for community dances and attend a few. See what styles are attracting the most people, and throw a barn dance featuring that style of dance. Square dancing may not be as appreciated in the northeastern United States as it would be in the southern states.

Throw an Irish-or Scottish-themed barn dance, if you’re of that descent. A family party is always a great place to celebrate your heritage. If the majority of your guests are your Irish relatives, hire an Irish dancing teacher, set up some Irish decorations and call it an Irish barn dance.

Consider going the traditional route if you are throwing the party close to Halloween. Barn dances have become very popular in the fall. People enjoy dressing in country-western-themed clothing and line dancing. Suggest that your guests dress as cowboys and cowgirls, and hire someone to teach some country line dances. Serve some hot apple cider, decorate the barn or room with haystacks, and make it a true country party.

Know the ages of your guests. If you are throwing a college party in New York or California, chances are the guests are not fans of country or folk music. You might want to hold the party in a barn and suggest casual attire, but select music and dancing in the style that young adults like. Hire a DJ to spin today's hottest hits, set up a keg and some non-alcoholic drinks for the under- aged, and rock the barn!

Let your budget dictate the theme. You might not have to sort through many themes if your budget is limited. Dance instructors of any kind can be expensive, so try to get a dance teacher friend or relative to volunteer. Choose the party's theme based on the type of dance your friend is willing to teach.
