Online writing groups can be an invaluable resource for writers and a great way to get feedback for your work. Most groups are free, and your work will be critiqued by fellow group members and writers. Be sure you critique other members' work and be sure to follow the group guidelines for submitting your writing. Below are some tips for submitting your writing to online critique groups.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Be sure to submit your best work. Act as though you are submitting your writing for publication. Make sure that the piece you submit meets the guidelines for that specific group.

  2. Step 2

Proofread your work. Having spelling and grammatical errors in your work sends a message that you are lazy. Take the time to carefully proofread and spell-check your piece before you submit it. If you submit work with several grammatical or spelling errors, you will likely annoy other group members. You will also likely receive feeback on your errors, not on the quality of your writing.

  3. Step 3

Follow any submission guidelines regarding the length of the piece. Many groups have a maximum word limit for each submission. If you have a longer piece, and you feel that it would be detrimental to shorten it, ask the group moderator for permission before posting it.

  4. Step 4

Do not submit revisions without permission. Many groups do not want to give feedback on revised pieces, especially if the revisions are minor ones. Also remember, when you submit a revised piece, fellow group members will be able to see who's advice you took and who you ignored.

  5. Step 5

Thank people for their feedback. It takes time to read submissions and leave feedback. Be sure to thank people for making the effort and taking the time, even if you don't agree with their feedback.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you have a longer piece, consider submitting it in two parts.
  • If you would like feedback on a revised work, contact a group member whose opinion you respect and ask him or her to give feedback on the piece outside of the group.
  • If someone leaves you feedback that is rude or hostile, do not respond directly to the feedback. Contact the group moderator to discuss the situation.
  • Do not submit a piece that you consider to be in draft form.
