Things You'll Need:
- Video camera
-
Step 1
Know the details of the audition inside and out. Where is it? What time is it? What will the child have to do? If you know as much as you can, you are less likely to stress out about it. If you are calmer, your child will be as well.
-
Step 2
Discuss the audition with your child. Make sure it is something they truly want to do, not something you want them to do. Not only is the audition process grueling, but if they get the part, you have to be certain it is a part they want to pursue.
-
Step 3
Teach your child to "slate" when they enter the audition. A slate is simply when they walk in and introduce themselves to those running the audition. Often times a director or producer makes up their mind at the slate. This few second process is crucial. Be sure to teach your child to talk slowly, clearly and make eye contact.
-
Step 4
Have a monologue or song prepared. A child isn't expected to do a long monologue, but they should have it memorized and it should be age appropriate. There are many books out there full of monologues for children.
-
Step 5
Record them on home video doing a practice audition. This way you and your child can watch it together. Don't over critique your child, you will only succeed in bringing down their self esteem, something they need to nail any audition.
-
Step 6
Do everything you can to put your child in a good mood the day of the audition. Tell them it is a special day and after the audition it may warrant a special treat. Keeping your child in a good mood and happy will help get through the audition.
-
Step 7
Put a blue shirt on your child if this audition will be recorded. Statistics show that directors and producers cast those wearing blue more than those wearing any other color.
