Things You'll Need:
- Clarifying shampoo
- Hair coloring
- Applicator
- Petroleum jelly
- Rat-tail comb
- Bowl
- Plastic gloves
-
Step 1
Decide what color you want to use. Depending on what look you're going for, finding the right color is key. If you want subtle lowlights, opt for colors that are slightly different from your own. If you are a blond, go for an auburn tone, as opposed to black or brown. If you want something drastic, go for the color that would contrast the most.
-
Step 2
Make sure your hair is clean. Use a clarifying shampoo a couple of days before the actually dying process takes place. This will allow the color to absorb better, without a layer of heavy buildup.
-
Step 3
Protect your skin. Put on plastic gloves to keep the dye from staining your hands. Also, apply petroleum jelly around your hairline to protect your face.
-
Step 4
Once you have mixed the dye, fill the applicator with it. Starting from the back of your head, place the applicator about 1/2 inch away from your scalp and begin to comb it through your desired section of hair. Repeat this step throughout the hair.
-
Step 5
When you are finished applying the hair color, check the directions in your kit to see how long you should leave it in. Allow it to sit for that specified period of time, then rinse it out. Rinse your hair until the water runs clear. The color should not rinse off--just the extra dye.

Step 6
Some kits include conditioners. If one is supplied, apply it to your hair and then rinse.
