How to Celebrate Halloween in New York City
For kids, Halloween is all about costumes, trick-or-treating and candy. Thankfully for the grown-ups and families, Halloween is not strictly for kids. New York City has been called the city that never sleeps, and Halloween is certainly no exception. In New York City, there are plenty of fun events and attractions that the whole family and the more mature set can enjoy on Halloween night and throughout the entire month of October. Visit New York’s Village Halloween Parade. This annual event in Greenwich Village is a must-see for locals and tourists alike. Wear a costume and enjoy live music, dancers and artists (see Resources below). You can watch the parade live on 6th Avenue between Spring Street and 21st Street. Can't make it to the parade? Have family friendly fun at the Boo at the Bronx Zoo. Animal lovers will enjoy this annual event: Take the whole family to dress up in costumes, get candy and, of course, see the animals (see Resources below). To reach the zoo take the BxM11 express bus. The bus makes stops along Madison Avenue between 26th and 99th Streets, then travels directly to the Zoo’s Bronx River entrance (Gate B).

Check out the Halloween Extravaganza and Procession of Ghouls at the Cathedral of St. John’s. Enjoy a spooky silent film and a procession of spooky ghouls who stay totally in character. To get to the cathedral, take a 1 or 9 train to the 110th Street and Broadway stop.

Visit the Nightmare Haunted House on the Lower East Side. This horrifying haunted house has become a New York sensation and will be open throughout the entire month of October (see Resources below). Leave the kids at home for this one. To get there by train, take the F train to Delancey Street or the J , M or Z to Essex Street. Walk to Suffolk Street, and make a left.

Attend the Halloween Festival and Costume Ball. On Halloween night, enjoy live music, jugglers, fire-eaters and more. Dress in costume for entry. This Theater for the New City event takes place at 155 1st Ave (see Resources below). The easiest way to get to the TNC is to take the 6 train to Astor Place & Lafayette Street. Then walk three blocks east to 1st Avenue.

Throw a Halloween party. If you do not want to face the crowds on Halloween night, throw an intimate party with family and friends. Have your guests dress up in costumes, dance to spooky music, and eat Halloween-themed foods for a party they will never forget.
