Located in Ontario where the Niagara River meets Lake Ontario, Niagara-on-the-Lake is one of Canada's jewels. Niagara-on-the-Lake is home to a vibrant wine making industry where visitors can sample the region's finest offerings at the many wineries. This, in addition to its rich history and beautiful natural attributes, makes the town an ideal choice for a relaxing vacation or a fun-filled day trip.

From Quick Guide: Basics of Canada Tours
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go wine tasting. There are several excellent wineries in the area that offer tours and tastes of their latest vintages. At picturesque Vineland Estates Winery you can enjoy low-priced tastes of the winery's offerings, then dine in the romantic restaurant located on the premises. The Reif Estate Winery offers top notch wine and cheese. At the Brae Burn Estate, where Inniskillin wines are produced, visitors can tour the premises then retire to the wine tasting room for low-priced tastes of Inniskillin wine.

  2. Step 2

Learn Niagara-on-the-Lake's history. Niagara-on-the-Lake is built on the site of an old Native American village and was settled in the late 1700s by British loyalists who left the United States at the close of the Revolutionary War. Visit the Niagara Historical Society and Museum to see a permanent collection of artifacts from the town's past as well as temporary exhibits (see Resources below).

  3. Step 3

Visit Fort George. This fort was of critical importance to the British Army during the war of 1812. Today the buildings have been restored so that visitors can see how a typical fort of the early nineteenth century looked. The fort's employees stroll around the grounds in nineteenth century dress and tell visitors about daily life on the fort 200 years ago, and in summer there are musket and artillery demonstrations.

  4. Step 4

Go fishing. Charter a boat to take you out onto the Niagra River and Lake Ontario for a chance at catching salmon, walleye, lake trout, smallmouth bass and more. Natural Wonders Angling Adventures and Reel Hard Fishing Charters are two to try (see Resources below).

  5. Step 5

Play golf. If you like to play golf, you're in luck since Niagara-on-the-lake is home to several fine golf courses. Try Niagara-on-the-Lake Golf Club for a quick round of golf. This challenging nine-hole course is located right in town and features panoramic views of the lake. Peach Trees Golf is another favorite local course, also located in town, and the Royal Niagara Golf Club prides itself on the excellent condition of its course.

  6. Step 6

Go horseback riding. Riding enthusiasts can head over to the Niagara Riding Stables for a relaxing afternoon spent riding the peaceful trails on horseback.

  7. Step 7

Take a ghost walk. For a spooky good time, take a lantern lit ghost walk of Niagara-on-the-Lake. The tour guide will take you to the homes and forts of the old town where it is said that spirits reside and tell you their sad tales (see Resources below).
