Things You'll Need:
- State permits and licenses
- Federal Basic Permit
- Authorized inspection and zoning compliance paperwork
- Fingerprint card
-
Step 1
Qualify for a North Carolina liquor license. To qualify for a liquor license you must be at least 21 years of age, a resident of North Carolina, and in good legal standing. The North Carolina Alcohol Beverage Commission defines good standing as not having been convicted of a felony within 3 years; not having been convicted of an alcoholic beverage offense within 2 years; not having been convicted of a misdemeanor controlled substance offense within 2 years; and not having had an alcoholic beverage permit revoked within 3 years (see Resources below).
-
Step 2
Know what type of business entity can apply for a liquor license. The application process is organized according to type of business entity or vendor that is requesting the license. These vary, and can include, but are not limited to, Limited Liability Companies (LLCs), Limited Partnerships and Individual Operations. Non-resident vendors are also permitted to apply and must follow the requirements stimulated by the North Carolina Alcohol Beverage Commission.
-
Step 3
Understand the requirements that influence the licensing process. According to the North Carolina Alcohol Beverage Commission's website, the reputation, character and criminal record of the applicant, plus parking facilities and traffic conditions in the neighborhood, as well as whether the establishment is located within 50 feet of a church or public school all influence the application process. Each is defined as part of the law and cannot be overturned if the operation is found to be in violation.
-
Step 4
Apply for a permit. Complete the permit application form(s) and notarize the applicant's signature. Include the appropriate fees (certified check or money order). Submit a rental agreement for the business entity, along with a copy of your Federal Basic Permit (see Resources below), authorized inspection and zoning compliance paperwork, and land plan of the business structure. Be sure to include a fingerprint card for each applicant.
