Origami Star Box

Origami is the ancient art of paper folding. Probably the most well know origami creation is the paper crane, made famous across many regions by the book "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes." The book is based on a true story about a girl who becomes ill with leukemia and sets to work folding 1,000 paper cranes in hopes that the gods will make her healthy again. Folding an origami star box is just as easy as folding a paper crane.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the top left corner down to meet the bottom right corner to form a triangle.

    • 2

Grasp the left corner of the triangle and fold it over to the right corner. This fold will be from the middle of the long side of the triangle to the point directly below it.

    • 3

Lift the top corner up while separating the two layers with your finger.

    • 4

Press down to flatten the layer so the first crease runs down the middle.

    • 5

Flip the paper over and repeat Steps 3 and 4 with the remaining triangle.

    • 6

Turn the open points toward you, then fold the right side to the center crease, forming a triangle where the shortest side is away from you.

    • 7

Fold the left side in the same manner as Sstep 6. Now there are two triangle-shaped folds on the top side.

    • 8

Turn the paper over, then fold both edges the same way you did the other side.

    • 9

Lift the right side triangle while opening. Smooth flat, similar to the fold in Step 4. Repeat for the other three flaps.

    • 10

Fold the triangle you created from the bottom point toward the top. Don't force it to reach the top point. Flip the paper over and repeat.

    • 11

Open the right side of the paper by pulling the top right side over to the left side.

    • 12

Fold both bottom edges to the center crease creating the same shape you did in Step 7.

    • 13

Grasp the bottom point you just created and fold it toward the top.

    • 14

Flip your paper over and open the remaining side. Fold both its bottom edges to the center line.

    • 15

Pull the new bottom triangle point toward the top, but not all the way.

    • 16

Lift both new triangles up. Fold the exposed bottom triangle in half, first toward one side, then the other.

    • 17

Gently pull each of the flaps to open the box.

Tips & Warnings

  • When you are opening the box, you may need to use your finger to push some of the folds outward so the box will stay open.

  • Make sure your folds are as even as possible or it will affect the shape of the box later.
